Whether you’re looking for a photographer for your wedding, family, pets, products, corporate work, or property, choosing the right photographer can feel overwhelming.
Over the years, I’ve noticed two very common mistakes people make when booking a photographer — and both can lead to disappointment if you’re not careful.
Mistake 1: Choosing a Photographer Based on Price Alone
Affordability absolutely matters. The good news is there are photographers at many different price points, often depending on experience, skill level, and business costs.
Experience is one of the biggest factors influencing price.
While you may occasionally find a highly experienced photographer who undercharges, this is rare.
So how do you find the best photographer for your budget?
Start with a clear price range in mind. Then ask for referrals specifically within that budget so you’re not being recommended photographers who are out of reach.
From there, look through the portfolios of photographers in your price range and choose the one whose work best matches your vision.
A recommendation alone is never enough always look at the portfolio.
Mistake 2: Booking Only Because Someone Referred Them
Referrals are valuable. In fact, about 90% of my work comes from referrals, and I’m incredibly grateful for that trust.
But here’s something important: everyone’s taste is different, and every photographer has a unique artistic style.
We don’t just document moments we interpret them.
We use different light, composition, color, and editing approaches.
So a photographer someone else loved may not create the look you love.
This is why I always ask potential clients: “Have you seen my work, and do you love this style?”
I also ask a potential client to send me inspiration images, so I can check whether I can achieve that look.
My goal is always to create the images a client is dreaming of and if I know another photographer who is a better fit for that style, I will gladly recommend them.
Referrals tell you a photographer is trusted and reliable.
The portfolio tells you if they are right for you.
How to Choose the Right Photographer for You
A simple process that works:
1. Decide your photography budget: Know your comfortable price range before you start searching.
2. Identify the photography style you love: Light and airy, natural, documentary, dark and moody, editorial
Google some images to know what feels like you.
3. Ask for referrals within that budget and style: This keeps recommendations relevant and helpful.
4. Study the photographer’s portfolio: Make sure their real work consistently matches what you want.
Choosing a photographer is ultimately about trust, connection, and shared vision.
When budget, style, and experience align, you’re far more likely to receive images you truly love and memories captured exactly the way you imagined.
